Kitchen Lighting & Power

The three types of lighting to consider are:

1. Task lighting
Whenever you need directional light. Halogens give bright, highly directional light. Fluorescent lights, especially the ultra-slim types are easily concealed and very energy efficient. Consideration should also be given to lighting in pantries and cupboards.

2. Ambient lighting
This is the basic lighting of a room. You need a functional fixture to give soft directional lighting around the room.

3. Accent lighting
This is the lighting you use to highlight architectural features and create mood. Miniature track lighting, lower voltage linear lights, energy efficient and LED lights are often used to produce accent lighting.

Power Points

Think about your work centres and what small appliances will be used where. Ensure you plan for ample power points, and don’t forget to plan a spot for your every day appliances.
