The three types of kitchen lighting to consider are:
1. Task lighting
Whenever you need directional light. Halogens give bright, highly directional light. Fluorescent lights, especially the ultra-slim types are easily concealed and very energy efficient. Consideration should also be given to lighting in pantries, cupboards, and under kitchen cabinets where LED lighting is also very effective.
2. Ambient lighting
This is the basic lighting of a room. You need a functional fixture to give soft directional lighting around the room.
3. Accent lighting
This is the lighting you use to highlight architectural features and create mood in your kitchen. Miniature track lighting, lower voltage linear lights, energy-efficient, and LED lights are often used to produce accent lighting.
Power Points
Think about your work centers such as the island benchtop in your L-shaped kitchen and what small appliances you will be using where. Ensure you plan for ample power points, and don’t forget to plan a spot for your everyday kitchen appliances.
